Bermuda’s Natural Wonder

A visit to Bermuda would be incomplete with a tour of the Crystal and Fantasy caves in Bailey’s Bay, close to the city of Hamilton and St. George’s town. Even those who have seen caves with stalagmite and stalactite formations before visiting these caves find them to be extraordinarily beautiful. For children and those who have never seen these formations, it is an experience that will never be forgotten.. Guided tours of both these caves are available for visitors.

The story goes that the Crystal and Fantasy Caves were discovered by two young men when a cricket ball rolled into a hole and they went to retrieve the lost ball. The caves are on property owned by the Wilkinson family and are open everyday for visitors. Crystal
Cave is so named because visitors can see clearly the crystal formations at bottom of the
Cahow Lake that fills the cave. Visitors are surrounded by formations of helectites, stalagmite and stalactites as they walk along the pathways and walk across the floating platform. Walking through the caves, visitors may get an occasional “cave kiss” – a droplet of water that drizzles down from the roof of the cave. The illumination highlights the natural beauty of the structures and when the lights are switched off deliberately for a moment, visitors experience the total darkness and the eerie silence of the caves.

The second of the Crystal and Fantasy Caves, Fantasy Cave has calcite mineral deposit formations that cover a whole wall, making it look like a frozen waterfall. Formations that reach from the ceiling to the bottom of the cave, a structure that resembles a chandelier and one that looks remarkably like the New York skyline are sights not to be missed.

After a tour of the Crystal and Fantasy Caves, visitors can browse the gift shop Fiddlestix or opt for a refreshing snack and drink at Café Ole.
