Workplace Health and Safety Prioritised in New Scheme

Monday, June 1st, 2009

As a culmination of plans that were already underway to ensure better health and safety for workers across the UK, the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) will formally launch its new scheme ‘Be Part of the Solution’ on 3rd June.

As per the new proposals, all stakeholders must work in close partnership with each other to ensure better overall health and safety at the workplace while allowing competition to thrive. The new scheme would not only compel organisations to comply with health and safety regulations but also prevent them from resorting to compromising with safety measures in order to reduce costs.

The Secretary of State for Work and Pensions, Rt Hon James Purnell, will start the event by giving the keynote address. Mr Purnell will be followed by Judith Hackitt CBE, Chair of HSE; Brendan Barber, General Secretary of the Trades Union Congress (TUC); and others. There will be an opportunity for questions to the panel to make the event more useful for the attendees.

A research on general attitudes towards workplace safety and people’s notions of risk being conducted by the HSE is expected to shed new light on this issue. The findings of the investigation will be revealed beforehand to make the launch of the scheme more relevant to the public.

Under the Corporate Manslaughter and Corporate Homicide Act 2007, Cotswold Geotechnical Holdings is about to attend court proceedings from 17 June for gross failure in the management of health and safety with fatal consequences involving the death of one of its employees. The case highlights the need of a new approach towards health and safety in workplaces.
