Tell Them Where To Go

Monday, September 22nd, 2008

Imagine you’re doing some research on the internet.

Now imagine you’ve found a site that says it has the kind of
information you’re looking for only …all the information
is contained on other pages of the site and the page you’ve
found doesn’t provide any links to those pages.

Now, how valuable would that site be to you?

This is a rhetorical question since we all recognize the value
of putting links to the other pages on our site where our
visitors can find them easily.

But how about e-books?

Imagine you’ve found an e-book that holds a lot of valuable
information. The e-book has more than 200 pages of information
that has been split into logical sections for ease of use
however … there is no Table of Contents or Index contained in the e-book.

If this is a PDF e-book and you know the right search term, you
may be able to do a search and find what you’re looking for. But
if it’s not a PDF e-book, you have no way of finding the
information except by clicking through every page.

So how valuable is this e-book?

This is not a rhetorical question since many e-books are
created with no Index or Table of Contents.

Sure, you can take notes so you’ll know where things are. Then
you can either go straight to that page or click that many
times.

But wouldn’t it make more sense for the author to have provided
either a Table of Contents or an Index? Would you buy a hard
copy reference book that didn’t provide 1 or both of these
things?

If you are an e-book author and create e-books that contains
more than a few pages (few is a ambiguous term so let’s say 20
pages), then you should provide either an Index or Table of
Contents for your readers.

If you create PDF e-books which are the “in thing” right now and
you use MSWord to write them, then making an Index or Table of
Contents is not that difficult. All you have to do is:

  1. As you write you’re
e-book, make every main section title a “Heading 1.”
  2. If you have
subsections you would like contained in the Table of Contents,
then make every subsection title a “Heading 2.”
  3. If you have
subsections within your “Heading 2″ subsections, you can make
those subsection titles a “Heading 3.”
  4. After you’ve finished
writing the content and saving, place your cursor at the
location where you would like your Index or Table of Contents.
  5. Click on “Insert” in
    the menu bar.
  6. Go to “References”
and select “Index and Tables … .”
  7. Click either the
“Index” or “Table of Contents” tab.
  8. Select the formatting
options you want and click “OK.”

You’ve just created a
Table of Contents. True, it doesn’t provide hyperlinks but at
least the reader can see where things are located and can get to
them easily.

You can play around with how you want to format your Index or
Table of Content until you find the one you like best. Just
remember to delete all the extra ones since MSWord doesn’t
overwrite, it just keeps adding them.

(Side Note – If you discover you need to add new sections
or subsections to your e-book, you’ll have to delete the Table
of Contents and recreate it after you’ve made your additions.)

If you’re creating your e-books in .exe format, making an Index
or Table of Contents is like creating a site menu. You have the
option of putting it on a separate page, putting it on every
page or both. I also suggest that you use hyperlinks in your
Index or Table of Contents since the reader cannot get to pages
easily unless you do. Also, if you decide to put it on a
separate page, you’ll want to provide a link to your Index or
Table of Contents on every page of your e-book.

Making either an Index or a Table of Contents does make a little
more work for e-book creators but it also makes the e-books more
user friendly.

So as you create your e-books, tell your readers where to go
because having quality information that is easy to find can help
build your reputation as a “good” e-book author.

eBook Publisher’s Dilemma: Should I Use PDF or Exe Format?

Sunday, September 21st, 2008

If you write and publish eBooks, sooner or later you will probably be faced with a dilemma – should you create your eBooks as .exe files or .pdf files?

PDF, which stands for Portable Document Format, is the file extension for files created with Adobe Acrobat.

Exe, which stands for ‘executable’, is the extension for files created by eBook compilers.

PDF is widely considered to be the ‘industry standard’ for eBook publishing, and for good reason. Here are some of the advantages of PDF files over exe files:

  1. With most eBook compilers you have to set up each page of your eBook as a separate web page. With Adobe Acrobat you can use a single MS Word file as the source document.

  2. PDF files automatically number each page – exe files don’t.

  3. PDF files are very easy to edit – you can insert pages, replace pages and delete pages (and the page numbering is automatically adjusted).

  4. Printing from a PDF file is much easier than printing from an .exe file.

  5. The ‘bookmark’ column on the left side of a PDF file makes naviagtion very easy – much easier than in an exe file.

  6. PDF files compress better than exe files, so you end up with a smaller, more manageable file.

  7. It’s virtually impossible to transmit a virus through a PDF file – exe files are susceptible to virus transmission and can become corrupted during download.

  8. Finally, by using PDF you automatically expand your potential market because PDF files can be read on both a PC and a Mac (exe files can only be read on a PC). Over 8 percent of the online population in the U.S. are currently Mac users (www.nielsen-netratings.com) – not a huge increase in your market, but nevertheless significant.

But exe files do have some advantages over PDF files, and perhaps the most important of these is price – most eBook compilers are a fraction of the cost of Adobe Acrobat.

Another advantage of exe files over PDF is the rebranding feature. The following eBook compilers all have a built-in rebranding function:

If you use free eBooks as a viral marketing tool, rebranding is the key to success, because people are much more likely to promote your free eBook if they can customize it with their own affiliate links.

Shorten Your Journey to Book Success with Teleclasses – Part 2

Friday, September 19th, 2008

Are you an author who wants your book to be a success? Have you read books, but still need some handholding on how best to promote your book? Are local seminars on book marketing and promotion just not available to you?

Something wonderful has happened with our flattening world. We can now give and attend seminars over the phone. As a presenter, I send by email ahead of the teleclass the workbooks and how to materials. If you have joined an eNewsletter like Dan Poynter’s “Publishing Poynter’s” or Judy Cullins, “The Book Coach Says…” or John Kremer’s “Book Marketing Tip of the Week, you probably have seen teleclasses offered in them.

Part one of this article is available at www.bookcoaching.com/freearticles/article-182.shtml or article-182@bookcoaching.com.

How Long are the Teleclasses?

Most teleclasses offer you a 55-minute or one hour format. That is a good listening time for most. It allows for 4-5 major points and discussion.

You may join a teleclass that is longer too–maybe 1 1/2 to 2 hours, depending on the format. Presenting a marathon of questions and answers can take from 1 1/2 to 2 hours with people coming and going as they want. When I offer this kind of teleclass I ask for questions via email before the phone session, and am sure to answer those on the call.

You can also join a group of one-hour teleconferences spread out every two weeks for a total of five or so sessions. These are sometimes called Small Group Coaching such as “The Book Achievers Small Group Coaching” or “The Marketing Achievers Small Group Coaching.” These are even more interactive, and your fellow participants on the line can talk to each other and the presenter. These groups do peer editing by email as well as getting feedback from the coach.

How to Register

Learn how to register when you visit a particular site. They give you step-by-step instructions. Then, you give them ordering information: They offer several ways to prepay for the teleclass such as a credit card or toll-free number. Once you are paid, you are registered and emailed the bridgeline and the handouts or workbooks for the conference call.

The Benefits of Teleclasses Over In Person Seminars

No dress code, travel, traffic, parking problems, computer, time wasted, or large expenses. Many top names charge $2000 for a weekend seminar–one in which you get too much information and little hands one. A teleclass is inexpensive, and is as easy as picking up your phone and talking to a friend! Get expert guidance from professional coaches and other presenters and learn from all on the call if you want to boost your book writing, book publishing or book promotion skills.

Over the past five years, people attending my teleclasses have come around to loving teleclasses.. With a personable teacher, you feel you are “there.” With a presenter who knows that hearing is important, you can relax and learn–with the back up of follow up email as well as email sent before the program. It’s a good thing, and some times the only way you’ll get to meet top people for your book writing and marketing needs.

Teleclasses are the most cost-effective, quickest, and easiest way to stay on top of your book, business, and marketing skills. They don’t replace one-on-one coaching, but they can shorten your learning curve before you spend money on a coach.

How to use Ebooks and Ebay to build your mailing list

Thursday, September 18th, 2008

Part 1: How to make money from affiliate ebooks without selling them

Part 2: How to use ebooks and ebay to build your mailing list

Part 3: How to use ebooks to drive more visitors to your site

In this section we’ll look at a very easy to use and cost effective method of getting laser targeted prospects on your mailing list.

First, let’s quickly re-cap part one; we learned there that we don’t need to make money from the initial sale of the ebook in order to profit from the ebook.
Keep this in mind as we go through the following dialogue.

ebay is a site that facilitates bringing buyers and sellers together in a secure and safe environment, in order to buy and sell a variety of goods and services, either through action or in a fixed price format.

The preferred payment system used there is Paypal. Paypal is an extremely user friendly and highly secure service for transferring money over the internet.

Here’s what we do:

1. List the ebook under several different categories, choose categories that have a specific connection to the topic and some that are more loosely connected. For example an ebook about Internet Marketing could be listed under the category of; books/internet information products/marketing; this would be a direct connection. A loosely connected category might be something like; Everything Else/Education & Learning/Adult & Career Education/Personal Development/Personal Finances. An easy way to find suitable categories is to use the search categories option as you are listing; it gives you recommendations that you can choose from.

2. We also need to play around with the Heading, using different headings for all of our listings, we should try to include the words and phrases that people will use when searching most often, and include them in the heading.

3. List the ebook as a 10 day auction and offer a ‘buy now’ option as well. Be sure to set the ‘buy now’ price at level that covers our fees if we wish to make this a free advertising campaign.

4. We need to create a html formatted sales letter. Do this by creating a page in html composer such as Mozilla or coffee cup, or any other composer. Outline all the details about the book and what’s in it etc. then at the end of the description add an Auto responder! That the customers can use to ask for more information about the product. We must ensure that the redirect page brings the customer back to ebay. This is vital because ebay has very strict policies regarding links that take people away from their site.

5. Now we can play around with the sales letter to make it more enticing for people to enter their details, some of the things we could use are; for a free report, to receive other offers and updates, for more information and the free edition, etc. we just need to become creative here.

6. If our ebook sells without getting any prospects, that’s great we have covered our costs and distributed our links. (see part one of this series) We can go ahead and re-list it, then start all over again!

That’s all there is to it! It doesn’t take long to set up and once in place, we can easily tweak the listings and continue this strategy.
It’s not limited only to ebay it’s also possible to use any of the other auction sites available online today.

Fullfilling the Wants

Wednesday, September 10th, 2008

There has always a time in my life when I wanted a little more money. I have been fortunate to always have had all I needed but have always fallen a bit short of all I wanted. In the jobs I held where I was paid a commission I was able to make more by doing more. In the other jobs I had to resort to finding a way to make extra money at home. When I am willing to put in a few extra hours in the morning or a few at night before going to bed it has been an easy proposition.

We love photography and like to have the best equipment to take pictures with. Within the next two years we are planning to take a trip to Africa and for that trip want to have really big telephoto lens for our cameras. With our income being fixed, find the extra money for these bigger and better toys has been a challenge. We decided that if we really wanted to do it, we would have to find a way to make extra money at home. Now we both work from the home and bring in the extra dollars that can be saved toward the lens.

How Do You Know If You Have Candida

Wednesday, September 10th, 2008

Candida overgrowth has been found to be a frequent complication or even a causative factor in many of today’s illnesses. Treatment is available but diagnosis has to come first. Yeast is normally found in the mouth, throat, intestines and genitourinary tract. Its presence in the body is not normally problematic and is balanced by a well-functioning immune system and friendly bacteria. If the immune system ceases to function properly, or the level of friendly bacteria in the body becomes too low – as can happen when too many antibiotics are introduced to the body, when steroids are used, when everyday stress becomes overwhelming or with poor diet choices – then Candida overgrowth may occur.

Someone with an overgrowth of yeast can experience any number of unpleasant symptoms such as a genital yeast infection, thrush in the mouth, fatigue, skin rash, depression and anxiety. The symptoms of Candida overgrowth are frequently treated with anti-fungal remedies. Even with these remedies, however, if your diet is not changed to create an environment within the body to prohibit the overgrowth of Candida, relief is sure to be temporary, and problem symptoms will return.

As Candida is a normal component of the body’s natural flora, using conventional laboratory testing to determine the need for treatment isn’t always helpful, and generally can only help to diagnose the late stages of a yeast infection. Current methodologies for testing include checking for the presence of yeast cells in the urine, saliva and stool, or the gut fermentation test which involves testing the blood for alcohol, dosing the patient with sugar and testing their blood again – if alcohol shows up in their blood it is assumed it has occurred from fermentation from the yeast in their gut.

It is also difficult to diagnose Candida overgrowth for a number of reasons. It shares symptoms with other conditions such as gluten intolerance and hypothyroid – and any combination of these can be present simultaneously, adding to the difficulty of diagnosis.

Another factor is that available tests are able to recognize only a few of the 150 known strains of Candida and the cells in the specimen may die while waiting for analysis resulting in a false “normal” result. Along with the test, then, other factors have to be considered before a diagnosis can be made. The doctor must consider if the patient has a history of factors that are known to result in Candida infections and establish that there are symptoms present associated with it. Additionally, the knowledgeable physician will experiment with dietary and antifungal therapy to see if the there are reactions consistent with Candida overgrowth. http://www.candida relief.com/candidatest/

Both herbal remedies and prescribed medications can be helpful in treating a yeast infection along with dietary and lifestyle changes. Check with your herbalist as to dose, mode of use and formulations. For antifungal remedies not available over the counter check with your doctor about side effects, costs and availability.

Researchers are working on discovering better testing protocols to establish earlier the need for treatment.

Keeping your immune system, “friendly” bacteria, and Candida in proper balance is possible with a combination of proactive changes; by altering your current diet, and with the responsible use of medicinal or herbal treatments you can maintain a healthy body.
